‘Indian steel exports do not come within the purview of anti dumping laws as exports from the steel sector are below one percent of the total production of steel’ said Shri R K Prasannan Development Commissioner for Iron and Steel. Replying to queries from newspersons Shri Prasannan said, ‘the steel sector did not get any direct subsidies and all subsidies to this sector were WTO compatible’.Earlier, delivering the key note address at the Asian Steel Conference-99, the Development Commissioner said the Government and steel producers aimed at increasing exports. The steel Exporters Forum had been set up to focus on all issues relating to steel exports from India, which accounted for just about one percent of the global steel trade. The second quarter of this year had exhibited positive signals, indicating an industry in its recovery path, said the Development Commissioner. Also speaking on the occasion, the Joint Development Commissioner for Steel, Shri S.K.Sinha said that they would probably be essentially stable markets domestically. The Asian scenario also looking up to some extent. Mr.D.A.Chandekar, CEO of ‘Steelworld’ delivered vote of thanks.
The Asian Steel Conference-99 was organised by ‘Steelworld’ and Ministry of Steel & Mines on 16th December at Nehru Centre, Mumbai. Speakers in the conference were Shri Gopi Puri from World Bank, Shri Rajesh Gupta, MD of Lloyds Steels, Dr. A.S. Firoz, Chief Economist of the Joint Plant Committee, Dr.Amit Ganguly, Mukand Ltd, Mr.S.L.Kaul, Sr.V.P., Essar Steel, Mr.A.C.Bose, TISCO. The conference was attended by around 300 steel professionals from India as well as from other countries. The first technical session was chaired by Mr.J.Mehra, MD of Essar Steel and the second was chaired by Mr.Vinod Shah, President, Mukand Ltd. A panel discussion followed the technical sessions and the panalists included Mr.Satish Kapoor, Regional Manager of TISCO, Mr.C.G.Patil, Regional Manager of RINL, Mr.A.K.Jain, President, Maharashtra Steel Re-roller’s association, Mr.Jitendra Singh, All India Induction Furnace Association, Mr.S.W.Wagh, JISCO and others. The conference was sponsored by Essar Steel Ltd.On 17th December there was a presentation by Indian Stainless Steel Development Association on ‘Innovative Applications of Stainless Steels’. The speakers included Mr.Y.P.S.Suri of Panchmahal Steels, Mr.A.N.Singh of Jindal Strips Ltd., Mr.K.D.Chiniwala of All India Stainless Steel Industries Association, Mr.Ramesh Gopal of ISSDA. The event venue, Nehru Centre is specifically meant for organising such high level industrial events and provides excellent facilities. Also ‘Asian Steel Conference 99’ is accompanied by an international exhibition ‘Steel Tech 99’. The month of December is best suited as the weather in this part of the country is quite pleasant at that time.
